FOLC Central!!!
Newsletter #6--April 15, 1998

Welcome/What's New?
Hey, FOLCs! FOLC Central has three new members! Yay! If anyone wants to write a column or anything, let me know:) Or if you just wanna say "hi", you can e-mail at LoveLC@aol.com

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Dean/Teri Sightings
If you didn't see Teri Hatcher on Good Morning America or The Rosie O'Donnell show on Tuesday (4/14), she has designed a Mother's Day card to benefit breast cancer research and awareness (as have several other celebrities). You can get one of Teri's cards for $1.99 at your local Rite-Aid!

Dean Cain's "Dog Boys" aired over a week ago on The Movie Channel, and I have heard great reviews by those who have seen it. If you missed it, check your local listings, because the movie might re-air soon.

Teri has a new movie! It's called "Since You've Been Gone", and it was supposed to be in theaters, but instead it's been turned into a TV movie. Be sure to watch it this Saturday, April 18, on abc. But I won't make you watch that channel if you don't want to :)

"Best Men" in theaters? In the United States? According to my local newspaper, Dean Cain's movie will come out this summer! But don't trust it--this newspaper is often wrong. But let's hope they're actually right! I would love to see "Best Men" this century, thank you!

Fanfic Contest!

Do you love Lois & Clark? Do you like to write? Enter the 1998 FOLC Central Fanfic Contest! Everyone who participates by sending in their own fanfic will get...

1) Their fanfic posted in FOLC Central's "Fanfic World"
2) A chance to win awards for their fanfic!
3) Their name entered in a random drawing for free L&C merchandise!
And more!

If you win, you will get your name printed in a FOLC Central newsletter, FC's web page, and your fanfic will get a special award icon/picture next to it in the "Fanfic World". You'll also get a ton of recognition! If that sounds good to you, here's what you do.

*Write a fanfic, either by yourself or with your friend(s). It can be funny, sad, weird, dramatic, tear-jerking, poetic, or even all of the above.
*Send the fanfic to LoveLC@aol.com, and it will be passed on to the judges. Be sure to include your e-mail address, your name or nickname/screenname, and the title of your fanfic!

That's it! That's all you need to do, and we'll take care of the rest. You may submit as many fanfics as you want! There's no limit! The deadline for submitting your fanfics is MAY 29, 1998. We will read the fanfics after the deadline and announce the winners in mid-June.

OTHER WAYS TO PARTICIPATE
*If you have a fanfic that has already been written, for instance, a fanfic that you wrote that is on the Fanfic Archive, send it to us! We will have a separate category for "already written fanfics". Please make sure to tell us that it is an already written fanfic!
*We need a picture of an AWARD. And we need someone to design it. It should be somewhere between 60x60 and 100x100, fairly small, but big enough to see. It should say "1998 FOLC Central Fanfic Winner", and there should be enough room on the picture for us to edit it so we can add what the winner won it for (best fanfic, best already written fanfic, etc.) Please send your design(s) to LoveLC@aol.com in a GIF file (or JPG) by MAY 15, 1998. We will take the one we like best and use it for the official award.
*We need judges for judging fanfics! Judges should be people who don't intent to submit any fanfics. We only need a few judges, so if you are interested, e-mail LoveLC@aol.com as soon as possible. Judges may be any age. If we choose you to be a judge, we ask that you keep it a secret. This isn't vital, but we would appreciate that you didn't tell anyone that you will be helping to judge.

Send All Fanfics to LoveLC@aol.com by May 29

Have fun with this, FOLCs! Get weird, get crazy, but send them! We will be giving out lots of awards, so there are plenty of chances to win.

PLEASE READ: No fanfics with extreme adult content or situations or language, in other words, anything that is higher than that of a PG-13 rating, will NOT be eligible to win, and will not be put in the "Fanfic World", due to the fact that there are minors present. FOLC Central is not responsible for lost fanfics. Fanfics must be your own, not somebody else's, the only exception being round-robin fanfics, in which case you need to include the names of ALL the authors when you send the fanfic. If you are unsure whether your fanfic is eligible, ratings-wise, just ask us, we'll be happy to let you know :)
All questions can be sent to LoveLC@aol.com!

Fanfic Tips
by Rachel Madden (Scardno007@aol.com)

hey FoLCs! Are you guys enjoying the newsletter? Good! You can tell that I changed the name of the column, but this is only temporary, the title will stay this way at least for the next two months, and you will find out the reason for this as you read. Anyway, I was reading fanfic the other day, and all these annoying little voices kept running through my head, "Write me!" and " No! Write me!" On the screen, and in my head, parts of some fanfics kept bothering me, I couldn't handle some parts because they sounded so...well...cheesy! You know what I'm talking about, right? No offense to any authors, of course, but It's just one of my pet peeves I can't get rid of. Soooo, I wrote a few tips for wet-behind-the-ears rookie fanfic authors, and even for all you seasoned veterans out there! Here goes, hope you find them at least a *little* helpful:

* Try not to get too mushy with romantic scenes between Lois and Clark unless you absolutely *have* to, for all you hopeless romantics out there. Such as saying "honey" or "sweetheart" every sentence when they're talking to each other. It puts readers in an uncomfortable position, but that's just me, there may be some of you out there who think otherwise...you can yell at me later. :)

* Try not to switch from setting to setting, not only does it confuse readers, but it will confuse editors too, believe me...:) At least stay in one place for a couple of paragraphs, unless the switching to and fro has something to do with the dramatical part it plays in your story.

* I believe that fanfics without all the cheesy villians makes the plot better, but I know a lot of you like to include the bad guys in there...it's what makes a story exciting, perching-on-the-edge-your-seat type thing, of course. But not all of your stories have to be that way. I especially liked, and I'm trying not to pick favorites here, the fanfic "Meet Me in Kansas City" by Chris Mulder. As she says at the end, "I didn't say the "S" word once...." Now I think *that* is the kind of stuff readers appreciate, being a reader myself, as I told you before. WAFF's and WHAM's, and it had humor, sadness, a little bit of anger, but it shows how Lois and Clark really are the "truest of soulmates." They didn't even make Superman this time, until the end at least, much less *need* him. It was a good plot. Another one of my favorites is "Couch Potatoes" by Phil Atcliffe, one that was just recently posted in the Lois and Clark Fanfic Archive. It also had an attention-grabbing plot, one where Lois and Clark sit down and watch the first movie in the old "Superman" series when they're just engaged. Very amusing to those who like that sort of thing. Passionate at some points, which you know I like, but serious in others...you can never be too careful is the point I'm trying to make. You can tell I went through a lot of trouble telling you I was thinking about it for a while ....

Okay, you can all backhand me via e-mail off later...buzz me and we can have a first-class, genuine debate over this. And before I leave I just *have* to tell you my numero uno pet peeve...fortunately for you, it's not related to L&C....You know when people erase stuff on chalkboards or on those transparent sheets they put on overheads? Well, I absolutely *hate* it when they leave marks when they erase! There's *always* some line or dot just taunting me up there. I feel like going up to the teacher or student, whoever's writing and say, " If you're gonna erase something, do it right!!!" It gets on my nerves *so much!* ARRRRGGGGHHH! There...I'm finished now. I could have a debate over absolutely nothing and make it sound either really interesting or really pointless, so I'm warning you....if you
e-mail me, beware......so that's my biggest pet peeve of them all....I know, I know..it's stupid...anyway, send in your responses if you have the time, I'll get back to you, blah, blah, blah. Don't forget about the fanfic contest! Keep those fanfics coming in, and I'll try and post them the month after next!
See ya!
Rachel :)

Something new...
Shout-Outs!
Sometimes on the radio, you hear people saying "hi" to their friends on the air. Or there's that old gag about people saying "Hi, Mom!" when they're on TV. Now YOU can send a greeting to your FOLC Friends in the next FOLC Central newsletter!

Send me (LoveLC@aol.com) and e-mail with the words "SHOUT OUT" in the e-mail subject. In about 15 words, you can send a message to someone! For example...

***
to jane: hey folc friend! send me a pic of dean, pleeeease???--luv, your best online pal
***
hey john, what's up!? i could always email you but this is more fun!--katee34167@net.com
***

Be sure to say who the shout out is for (or you can send it to "ALL FOLCS" or something). Yeah, you can even send one to yourself. And be sure to say who the shout out is from if you want the person to know. I'll put as many as I can in the next newsletter:)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
RAnDOM ThOUgHtS

Send em! Send anything. It doesn't have to have something to do with L&C--it can be about movies, other TV shows, your life, your favorite numbers, your French poodle's favorite movie...whatever. LoveLC@aol.com is the address! But you know that.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That's all for this newsletter! Hmmm...for some reason, I thought it would be longer! :) Our next newsletter will come out on May 1. So start sending those fanfics, and keep watching Lois & Clark!

Molly
