The Diva Factor
by Karen (LadyFOLC@aol.com)

Diva

di*va (noun), plural divas or di*ve
[Italian, literally, goddess, from Latin, feminine of divus divine, god -- more at DEITY]
First appeared 1883
: PRIMA DONNA

The word "diva" has been thrown around a lot lately. From the VH-1 Diva specials to "George" asking me what a diva is, because he's too stupid to know when one is standing in front of his face, in all her luminous glory. He's an ignorant clod. Whoa, off-topic! Well, since I don't really approve of Webster's version of the word, I thought I'd throw in my own criteria for a diva.

A diva is someone who oozes fabulousness from each and every pore. A diva is typically female, and a fine, outstanding one to boot. She is professionally enchanting, intelligent, witty, and a seductress by trade. Divas get what they want, and the best divas are so good that other people WANT to do their bidding. (This disqualifies Sharon Stone, who is extreme supreme fabulous but other people are too scared of her to say no.) A real diva exudes her own kind of light - a mixture of charm, glamour, beauty, intelligence, sarcasm, experience, and wit. When a diva walks into a room, you can feel it without looking. When she walks out, you can feel the undertow. They're so larger than life, they can get away with almost anything. And if you're a famous diva, drag queens want to emulate you.

This may seem self-serving since I consider myself a diva. But I am a dramatic, outrageous person who is a slave to glamour - what other choice would a woman like myself have but to become a diva? My most comfortable shoes - including my bedroom slippers - have four inch heels. I bought a vintage beaded wedding dress for no reason other than it looked spectacular on me. I wear chiffon and leopard print to the movies. I decorate my body completely according to whim, and never leave the house without personal jewelry. I throw temper tantrums and rants that last for hours, and stand on tabletops with a complete lack of inhibition. I charm because I can (ask several guys at Chapel Hill), but never blatantly seduce. I know my limits, and I push them. I thrill myself in entertaining and fascinating others.

So I consider myself a diva. And as much as a true diva never admits to other people having as much fabulousness as her, there are other divas in this world. But shh, don't tell too many people. My best friend Bisa is a diva. Always has been, always will be. Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler, Madonna, Diana Ross, Sophia Loren, Fran Drescher and RuPaul (yes, I know) are some current examples. Classic divas are Marilyn Monroe, Holly Golightly (if you don't know that name, I urge you to see Breakfast at Tiffany's), Bette Davis, Rita Hayworth. I didn't think Shania Twain deserved to be called a diva until I saw that video of hers where she wears head-to-toe leopard print and totally pulls it off. SHE QUALIFIES. Mariah Carey is not a diva - She's a big-haired tease with an attitude and no class. Gloria Estefan? She's a good entertainer, but not a diva. Same with Celine. Cher certainly has the wardrobe (watch during her Sonny and Cher days) and staying power of a diva. Tina Turner is an absolute diva. Brandy....I first wanted to say that she's too young, but she's almost my age. She's got the world wide coverage of a diva. But I just don't see that spark yet. Too much girlish innocence and giggles and not enough "This is me, love me and worship me". Maybe in a few years. Buffy could be a diva, but she doesn't quite realize it within herself. I could teach her.

Did this column seem a little self-serving? Good. The diva wouldn't have it any other way.

Random Thoughts
by Jessi (elfsrcool@hotmail.com)

Hi there all. Today is not a good day. Subway poisoned me on April
Fool's day. No that is not a joke. I'm feeling a lot better now, but
still! Subway, the groovy place that had those cute little Superman toys
and that I eat at every chance I get, decided to become un-groovy. The
turkey, which I get every time, was bad. Now every restaraunt that's
fairly close to me in this stupid town I can no longer eat at. Sonic
poisoned my dad about a month ago. Since he works with the health
department, he got them to go inspect Sonic and they got a 'C' rating.
He also got them to go inspect Subway, but I don't know what they got.
On a happier note, I got a Superman stamp!!! Well, it's not the only
stamp I got, because it came with 14 other stamps that had to do with
the 30's. Oh, and the deprived little town video store has none of
Dean's movies and I don't mean they are all out. They don't even have
them in stock! And Hollywood Video still has all copies of every movie
you'd ever want to see out. And on top of all of that, I can't rent any
Dean movies without one of my parents because they are all rated 'R'.
It's just not fair I tell you! Well, I guess I'll go read some fanfic
now... BYE!

The Obsession Connection

I babysit for a little boy named Anthony Michael Nelson, for 13 hours every week, and let me tell you, this whole thing has started to get to me. The kid is 15 mos. old and he just does not appreciate quality televison. I brought over a tape of a TV show which will remain nameless (not L&C) and he fell asleep. On the other hand, the Teletubbies fascinate him. I guess it must be an age thing.

Furthermore, I am forced to watch the shows the baby likes. So every day, I'm bombarded by purple dinosaurs and Bob Barker and furry little creatures that say thinks like "Lala turn to wear the kirt", because they can't pronounce the 's' in 'skirt', because they're, well, furry little creatures who can't speak English. And I'll spend the rest of the day with the "Teletubbies" theme song in my head, or worse--the "Zoboomafoo" theme song, which is quite a catchy little number. If you've never seen "Zoboomafoo", it's about these two brothers, Chris and Martin Kratt, who study animals. They have this pet...somesortofanimal, who is part puppet, part not-puppet, who eats food out of what looks like a candy dispenser, and has very scary eyes. Do not look directly into them.

And then it happens--I start to think...hey, that Chris Kratt is kind of cute. And he is. Martin's kind of weird though. And then there's that Steve from "Blue's Clues". He's pretty cute. And Barney--well, for a dinosaur, he's very...

What??? What am I saying? This is insane...I've started to fixate on guys from kids' morning shows! The next thing I know, I'll be lusting after Big Bird and Cookie Monster. Luckily, I'm home now, where my L&C tapes live, and I can watch Dean and not feel guilty. So speaking of L&C, here is your trivia question for this week. In what episode do we see Lois popping some of those little plastic packing bubbles? Send your answers to LoveLC@aol.com, and you could win 50 superdollars! Anyway, one of my favorite L&C episodes is the Pilot. I guess, partly, because it's the longest episode (double your pleasure, double your fun!) but also because it's really funny. I like the part where Martha makes Clark the suit, and they try on all the different rejects before settling on the cool blue number. I like how Clark flies to China to get dinner for himself and Lois. I like how he bursts into the hangar to rescue Lois, but then realizes he can't save her without revealing his powers. I like it when Lois comes over to Clark's apartment, and he's wearing just a towel. I like it when...well, you get the picture. It's a very super episode:) And it's ten million times better than "Teletubbies".

Trivia!

Last week's question was...Name the episode that this quote came from...
"You bring the bagels."

ANSWER: "Whine, Whine, Whine"! This is the episode where a weirdo rock star sues Superman. The quote is said by Constance Hunter, Superman's lawyer.

Congrats to...ward8120@mach1.wlu.ca, who was the first to answer correctly, and to Sharpei11, our random winner, who each get 50 superdollars! Also, way to go to DeeDee, MandyC, Hoppe6, Jessi, MelR, and ErinK! Thanks to everyone who replied:)

This week...try the Awards Show quiz! See the "What's New?" column at the beginning of this newsletter, for more info:)
